Gravity's Rainbow
Gravity's Rainbow
Oil on Panel
11" x 14"

I don't find it very easy to title paintings (hence all the 'Untitled's...). It takes a while to name a painting, most of the time I'm unsure exactly what a painting is about, until much later. It is exciting when a title appears from the ether.

Anyhow, this work had a rainbow type curve early on, and I liked it (who doesn't like a rainbow?) but grew frustrated trying resolve the foreground. After trying many options, over many days and weeks, I decided to wiping out the front area with a dark hue. The color I chose is made with burnt vines, called German Vine Black an oil paint by Natural Pigments in Willits, CA.

It was satisfying to blot out the uncooperative underneath and spread out the transparent black paint on top and scratch some shapes onto the surface. Politically speaking it's apropos of how I'm feeling. Hopeful in the quagmire of a swampy, scary terrain. An incomplete rainbow with big fat drops of rain plopping down on the asphalt.

I stepped back, looked, and heard, ...'gravity's rainbow", from the lyric/song "Gravity's Angel", by the ever amazing, Laurie Anderson.

This is gravity's rainbow.
