I lived for a time in a land (ok, Bay Area) of bridges and overpasses. Commuting to my many teaching gigs was a daily sequence of ascents and descents—connecting highways, city streets and then the views!of the bay, the city (ities) and mountains. At the time I painted this, I wasn't thinking about bridges or water, I was thinking about how much I like Amy Silman's paintings, and how this painting reminded me of bodies. Now it reminds me of where I used to live. So a painting can have many lives and be about many things, revealing itself over time.
